Particpation in the NMI-EDIT Project can take a variety of forms. Campuses can contribute to the technical development, outreach and education, and testing activites, described below. To find out more about the overall NSF Middleware Initiative, contact us.

Technical Working Groups

The foundation of NMI-EDIT's work is the research done by our working groups, the members of which are from the higher education, vendor, research, and government sectors, both from US and international organizations. This effort is led by Internet2.

Our deliverables are typically produced by these working groups, sponsored by one or more NMI-EDIT Consortium members. For example, Internet2's MACE-Directories might develop a document on affiliated directories. This working group is sponsored by Internet2, but the document would be included in an NMI release.

In order to ensure project continuity and keep these teams to a manageable size, participation may be limited; however, the working groups are always interested in receiving feedback. If you are interested in getting involved, send mail to participation@nmi-edit.org. Corporations must satisfy any corporate membership requirements of the working group's sponsoring organization in order to participate.

Institutions and individuals may also have valuable contributions that fall outside the current scope of the working groups; if you are interested in sharing such items, refer to Outreach and Education below.

Outreach and Education

NMI-EDIT's Outreach effort is led primarily by EDUCAUSE, which works with the Consortium members to deliver high-quality educational products and services to inform, guide, and assist the higher education and research communities in their research, evaluation, and deployments of core middleware. The Campus Architecture Middleware Planning (CAMP) Workshop series is one example of our Education activities. For more information on upcoming CAMPs and related events, see the News/Events page.

NMI-EDIT is also partnering with the state systems of the University of Alaska, University of Texas, and California State University, as well as the Great Plains Network Consortium to offer core middleware education and deployment assistance to their member campuses. This project would be of interest to state higher-education systems and regional network providers. For more information, read about the Extending the Reach Project.

We are seeking items that promote or support the adoption of identity and access management for use by other institutions. These resources will be added to the Related Links page and could take the form of case studies, practicies, or documents relating to an implementation such as technical or policy aspects or project deployment plans. If your institution is interested in participating, send mail to participation@nmi-edit.org.

NMI Integration Testbed

The NMI Integration Testbed was proposed as part of the first NMI-EDIT award to bring real life feedback to bear on the design, evolution, and deployment of NMI middleware components. The NMI Integration Testbed was developed and managed by the Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA), with participation from: University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Alabama in Huntsville , Georgia State University, University of Florida, Florida State University, University of Michigan, Texas Advanced Computing Center, and the University of Virginia. The University of Southern California is also participating on a non-contracted basis.

For more information, read the NMI Integration Testbed Final Report (PDF) or contact Mary Fran Yafchak, NMI Integration Testbed Manager.
